  • Know your credit score. It's an obvious bad credit auto loan tip, but we have to say it. Get a free credit report from each of the major bureaus once a year (www.freecreditreport.com).   • Know your likely interest rate and prepare a budget. Bad credit used car loan rates often run between 12% and 18%. Use a realistic estimate of your bad credit car loan rate and net monthly income drive your payments and, therefore, the amount you borrow.   • Consider your credit union. Many people belong to credit unions through work, school or other affiliations. Many others can join credit unions easily. In fact, an emerging class of credit union requires payment of only a small fee to join. Credit unions increased their share of auto lending dramatically in the last few years (some estimates have them above 15%).
